The House of Gärsnäs kitchen

The cultural island Skeppsholmen in Stockholm has a new attractive destination: The House of Gärsnäs. Here, the Swedish furniture company Gärsnäs has created a meeting place for both architects and customers as well as the general public. And at the heart of the house is a specially designed concept kitchen developed by the reputable interior designer Lotta Agaton and Nordiska Kök.

 - We want this house to feel like a home for everyone, with the heart in the kitchen. That's why the kitchen also became extremely important to us, Anna and Dag Klockby says, co-owners of the furniture company Gärsnäs.

The specially designed concept kitchen developed by Lotta Agaton and Nordiska Kök is a fusion between a kitchen and a beautiful piece of furniture. Here, the traditional finds a home in the modern.

In one of the rooms you´ll find the sofa and armchair Julius. The stools are called Elsa and Jack and are designed by Färg & Blanche.

Just behind the Modern museum in Stockholm, is the old chancellery building from 1862, which for many years was home to the navy's shipyards. Sun cats walk on the yellow plaster facade and small rose hips frame the entrance to the Showroom and the House of Gärsnäs store, whose doors were finally opened to visitors in March 2022.

This is a dream come true. We see this as a house where everyone is welcome to be inspired, Dag Klockby says.

The warm feeling follows inside. The rooms, which are spread over three floors, with the light in light shining in from the large windows which – if possible – make the exclusive designer furniture shine even more. Each room has its own character that best showcases Gärsnäs chairs, sofas and tables.

The counter top in Thala gray limestone creates gentle life while harmonizing with the muted color scheme.

The House of Gärsnäs is open Tuesday to Sunday every week. Architects from Sweden and all over the world come here with their clients. But everyone is welcome.

— The stone is wonderful, I love it, says Anna Klockby. The framework is in light-pigmented oak and goes all the way down to the floor, which creates an exciting design that exudes the same feeling and quality as other Gärsnäs furniture.

Function is important to me. And that goes hand in hand with quality and materials, says Anna Klockby.

The oak dining table is called Ateljé table and is designed by Matti Klenell.

The sideboard is designed by Märta Friman and is called Bond.

Before the grand opening in March, a careful renovation was carried out. Everything was made to restore the house's former glory and in line with what Gärsnäs stands for – the fine, modern and rich. Always with sustainability in mind and a strong sense of design. Therefore, it was natural to enlist the help of interior designer Lotta Agaton, as well as to build a kitchen with Nordiska Kök.

— In a way, we have that soul that we think Nordiska Kök also has. We turn 130 next year and are a very old furniture industry. The actual production is located in Österlen and that is where we produce and manufacture everything. We protect our own manufacturing, which is perhaps now more important than ever, considering everything that is happening in the world, says Dag Klockby.

The day bed “Dag” gives you the opportunity to rest, perhaps digest all the fine impressions you get as a visitor to the House of Gärsnäs.

On the right in the picture is the Dandy armchair with its associated footstool, both designed by Pierre Sindre. In the background we glimpse the kitchen and can see the harmony the kitchen has with the rest of the interior.

The result is a unique site-built kitchen, not unlike the timeless Scandinavian design style of Gärsnäs furniture. The framework is wider and the stone slab in Thala Gray limestone slightly deeper. The massive shutters are painted in the same carefully selected color as the walls.

The idea was all along that the kitchen would be more like a piece of furniture. And we wanted a real kitchen, not just a kitchenette, explains Dag Klockby.

It would blend nicely into the room and we think that's right. The result is impressive, says Anna Klockby.

They both agree that the kitchen is the heart of a home.

If you have a really nice kitchen, it will be a focal point. That's where everyone ends up, says Anna Klockby and adds:

— It can be so beautiful if you just plan it right.

The Wood, Light & Easy, Gästis and Moderna chairs by Åke Axelsson are gathered around the dining table. The chair is petite and closest in image to the Madonna by David Ericsson. Some of the chairs are covered in vegetable tanned leather from Tärnsjö.

One of the rooms functions as a studio room where visitors can look at samples. Chair Nomad and table Combi. Black chair Waxholmaren. The floors are beautifully soaped.

— This is not a trendy kitchen, it is classically modern. And it can live for a long time, which is important to us. We don't work with fast trends, we have an environmental mindset and think everyone needs to think, both as a consumer and a manufacturer. We have to be sure that we make products that can last a long time and that we do it with a clear conscience, says Anna Klockby.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee joins the smell of newly made wooden furniture. Several coffee thermoses stand in a row on the limestone worktop.

- Lotta wouldn't like this, laughs Anna Klockby. But we get so many visitors. Some hang here for hours and work. We want the house to live, so it's great fun. Many people gather in our nice kitchen and we get a lot of questions about it. And it takes a lot of coffee.

The kitchen is the heart of most homes. It is a natural gathering point. And it can be so beautiful, if you think a little.

The Pia lamp – the shining globe – is a timeless classic from Gärsnäs, for both ceiling and floor and in different sizes.

Above the TAK table by David Regestam hangs the w151 XL ceiling lamp from Wästberg. The armchair is called Hedda, designed by David Ericsson.

We enjoy cooking. Even with food, it's the ingredients that make the difference. You can never get the same feeling with, for example, semi-finished products. It's about quality there too. You become more discerning and learn over the years what is important. And if you're used to surrounding yourself with good quality, it's hard to go back, says Anna Klockby.
