The Classic Shaker Kitchen with Rustic Elegance
In a beautiful early 20th-century home on Sweden’s west coast, dating back to 1914, Jesper and Fredrika have created a home where history, craftsmanship and natural materials take centre stage. At the heart of the house is a bespoke Shaker kitchen from Nordiska Kök — a timeless kitchen in solid wood and natural limestone, carefully designed to feel as though it has always belonged to the property.

Soft beige tones, oak and limestone come together in a timeless expression in the classic kitchen from Nordiska Kök.
The cabinetry was delivered primed before being traditionally hand-painted on site — a detail that contributes to the authentic, built-in appearance.
When the family first took over the house, it was in great need of renovation and almost the entire interior has since been rebuilt. Throughout the process, however, the ambition remained the same: to preserve and restore the home’s original character with respect for the architectural details that define a classic early 20th-century Swedish home – with generous ceiling height, original panel doors, high skirting boards and the traditional room layout.
The kitchen became a central part of the renovation and the family chose a bespoke solid wood Shaker kitchen from Nordiska Kök, where natural materials and traditional craftsmanship play the leading role.
– Our vision was to create a timeless and authentic kitchen that felt in harmony with the character of the house. We wanted to combine classic design with practical functionality for everyday life, says Fredrika.
Like all kitchens from Nordiska Kök, the kitchen is fully bespoke and made to measure down to the smallest detail, allowing it to feel like a natural part of the home. The range cooker is from Lofra and the extractor hood from Fjäråskupan.
The kitchen has been designed to feel completely at home within the property – a classic fitted kitchen centred around traditional craftsmanship and timeless materials.
The hand-painted Shaker cabinetry, with its defined frames and carefully crafted detailing, creates a look that feels both elegant and authentic. The warm oak kitchen island adds depth and warmth while serving as a natural gathering place for cooking and socialising. Limestone surfaces and brass details further enhance the rustic feel and connect beautifully with the home’s early 20th-century character.
– For us, it was important to choose materials that age beautifully and feel authentic over time. We wanted the kitchen to look as though it had always been here, Fredrika explains.
Limestone from Kinnekulle has been used for both the worktops and splashback, creating a cohesive and timeless feel throughout the kitchen. Its natural texture and tactile quality complement the architecture and history of the house beautifully, while also pairing perfectly with the limestone flooring.
The centrally positioned kitchen island in oak and limestone is a timeless feature often found in classic period kitchens — equally practical as it is beautiful.
Beyond the material choices, the layout also played an important role in the final result. To create a larger and more sociable kitchen, Jesper and Fredrika decided to relocate a former pantry and integrate the space into the kitchen — a change that made a significant difference both visually and functionally.
An important source of inspiration throughout the renovation came from old photographs of the house dating back to the 1930s, offering insight into the property’s original appearance.
– The photographs helped us understand how the house once looked and became an important guide for many of our decisions. They will also form the basis of the upcoming exterior renovation, where we want to restore the house to its original character and colour palette, says Jesper.
The beautiful coffered ceiling and staircase on the ground floor were added sometime between the 1930s and 1940s — details the family chose to preserve as a reminder of the home’s history. The floor lamp is from Akari.
The rounded edge detail on the limestone worktop adds softness to the overall design.

What first made Jesper and Fredrika fall in love with the house was its character — the generous ceiling height, natural light and sense of history within the walls. Original panel doors, high skirting boards and the traditional room layout have therefore been preserved as important parts of the home’s identity. At the same time, subtle alterations have been made to improve flow and adapt the house for modern living, including adjustments to several door openings.
The traditional floor plan, with separate kitchen, dining room and serving hallways, has been preserved as an important part of the house’s identity. Dining chairs by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn.
The bathroom vanity unit is also from Nordiska Kök and follows the same timeless design language as the kitchen. Read more about bathroom furniture from Nordiska Kök.
Today, the kitchen serves as the natural heart of the home, where family and friends gather and spend time together. While there are many things the family appreciates about their new kitchen, it is the overall feeling that stands out the most.
– It’s very much about the overall atmosphere — from the proportions and joinery to the materials and details. Everything needed to work together for the kitchen to feel right within the house. We’re especially pleased with the sense of quality throughout. The solid wood Shaker kitchen combined with the carefully selected materials creates a richness and craftsmanship you can truly feel. It feels both timeless and genuine, while also working beautifully for everyday life.”
– Nordiska Kök really listened and understood the character of the house. At the same time, they contributed valuable expertise in both design and functionality, which made the final result feel carefully considered in every detail. The kitchen is not only beautiful — it feels perfectly suited to the character of the house.
The generous ceiling height has been maximised with cabinetry running all the way to the ceiling — a solution that both increases storage and enhances the bespoke, built-in feel.
