The Rustic Elegance kitchen

In this elegant turn of the century-apartment, Jeanna and Tom has created a beautiful space with equal parts harmonic and rustic interiors. The bespoke farmhouse kitchen is no exception. With a soft color palette, timeless expression and modern features the kitchen blends in perfectly both in the apartment’s history and into the modern life.

After several ambitious solo-renovations, they were longing for a project together. In November 2022, after a six-month long search process, Jeanna and Tom found the right listing.

The couple decided on a turn of the century-apartment at Östermalm in Stockholm. The building traces back to the late 19th century, with notable restoration made in the 1940s, infusing a more functionalist style. When Jeanna and Tom moved into their apartment, the only remaining original detailing were parts of the parquet flooring.

– We saw potential, much thanks to the ceiling height and generous natural light flow from two directions. We were allowed to change the floor plan and decided to move the kitchen. The space instantly got a more social feel too when you could see the street below. The bedrooms are facing the yard, which adds to the tranquility.

Jeanna, who grew up on the Swedish countryside, has a natural infatuation with rustic home interiors. The elegant farmhouse kitchen opts for that very flair, creating a charming, yet subtle contrast to the overarching style of their home. The site-built carpentry in oak strengthens the rustic essence.

– The opportunities are endless when it comes to site-built kitchens. Since you really take advantage of each inch of the space, and in this specific case the ceiling height, the storage solutions always turn out to be remarkably space-efficient. And of course, it’s always great when you can design your own kitchen from scratch.

For both Jeanna and Tom, it was of top priority to design a functional kitchen space tailor-made for their own needs.

Our vision was very timeless and Nordiska Kök knew how to bring it to life. The process was simple, easy to follow, and we could redesign even the smallest of details until we felt completely happy. Once finished, it really exceeded our expectations.
— Jeanna and tom

A kitchen in a classic country design to match the history of the apartment and the house, but at the same time with all the smart functions today's modern life requires.

Jeanna’s passion for art and interior traces far back. Through her work at Uppsala Auction chamber, where she is in charge of modern and contemporary arts, she gets to dive further into her interest on a daily basis. Tom is self-employed, primarily working as a financial advisor for an array of brands.

In terms of preferred interior styles, Jeanna often experiments with literature, art, and flowy textiles in her spaces, while Tom leans towards Scandinavian minimalism and muted hues. For this project, the couple were eager to recreate the original turn of the century-feel, with a modern twist.

 – For us it was important to restore the original essence as much as possible, using stucco, ceiling roses, parquet flooring, and carpentry.
